Vital Need of the Body for Certain Unsaturated Fatty Acids I. Experiments with Fat-free Diets in Which Sucrose Furnishes the Sole Source of Energy* by Herbert M. Evans

چکیده
Until recently, the chief physiological role assigned to dietary fats has been that which considered them merely as fuel for the expenditure of energy. In fact, the idea has prevailed that so long as the demands for the fat-soluble and other vitamins were satisfied, animals could dispense with fats entirely’ (l-3). When, in 1927, Evans and Burr (4) attempting further purity of synthetic diets, employed sucrose as the sole source of energy, the foundations were laid for the recognition of two phenomena, both of which deal with the role of fats in the physiological economy of the rat. One of these phenomena deals with a peculiar relationship of fats to vitamin B which they spare; that is, in the presence of fats, less vitamin B is required than in their absence. This was reported by Evans and Lepkovsky (5) in 1928. The other phenomenon deals with the impossibility of normal growth or physiological well being in rats on diets adequate in all known respects, but rendered rigidly fat-free. This was reported simultaneously in 1929 by Burr and Burr (6) and McAmis, Anderson, and Mendel (7). The deficiency of rats on fat-free diets is characterized by impairment of growth after an initial growth had been accomplished, dermatitis which results in scaliness of the skin and tail,

Vital Need of the Body for Certain Unsaturated Fatty Acids Ii. Experiments with High Fat Diets in Which Saturated Fatty Acids Furnish the Sole Source of Energy*
In our studies on the physiological importance of fats to the animal organism (l), we became convinced that progress could be made only when individual fatty acids were used. Even the most simple natural fat is a complex entity. In addition to glycerides of fatty acids, we have the substances collectively called the nonsaponifiable matter. From the present standpoint these may be looked upon as...

A total of 700 day old female broiler chicks (Ross 308) were distributed into seven groupsin acompletely randomized designwith five replicates, and 20 chicks in each replicate. Dietary treatments, timeof the switch from an unsaturated sunflower oil (SFO) to a saturated tallow (T)dietary fat source, were: 1) SFO for the entire growth period (6 weeks), 2) SFO for 5 weeks followed byT for last wee...
متن کاملEffect of Nitrogen deficiency and light intensity on the fatty acid composition of Chaetoceros calcitrans
Marine diatoms are important sources of fat and fatty acids that are considered for aquaculture and alternative energy sources, and under varying environmental conditions in algae. In order to influence the nitrogen deficiency and light intensity of the medium culture on the C.calcitrans fatty acid composition, algae was exposed to 4 nitrogen treatments (25,50,75 and 100% nitrogen) and light in...
متن کاملBlood gases and metabolite content and ruminal fermentation in response to diets with different fermentability in Holstein dairy cows
The objective of this study was to determine the effects of diets having different fermentability on blood gases, blood metabolites and ruminal fermentation parameters in Holstein dairy cows. Four multiparous Holstein dairy cows (665 ± 25 kg BW, 170 ± 7.0 DIM and 15±1.5 kg of milk yield), fitted with rumen cannulae, were used in a 4×4 Latin Square design with 28-d periods. Corn starch and sucro...

A total of 21 dairy goats in mid lactation were randomly assigned to three experimental diets in a completely randomized design. The diets contained 0, 3, or 6% WAS, and consisted of 45% forage and 55% concentrates. Milk fat and the ratio of milk fat to milk protein were significantly lower in goats fed diets containing 6% WAS (P≤0.01). Digestibility of crude fat was higher, and that of neutral...
